Too Hard Not to Be Greedy with My Coffee Gift

November 20th, 2009 by keen bean

I found it nearly impossible to resist using the coffee gift I received for my birthday from my sister in law via mail last week. She sent the present with a message that I was to save it for her visit next month, so we could enjoy the excellent product together. At first, this seemed like a sweet gesture, and I was looking forward to her arrival and our cuppa together. But then the tide changed, after I further investigated the free coffee thoroughly.

It sounded absolutely exquisite, and I no longer wanted to wait to have it. In fact, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I cringed at the plan to share it at all. Very childish of me, I know. Still, it is what it is and with me loving coffee the way I do, I drank some. I have decided to blame her for this blunder. Surely she should have known better than to put such temptation in my path. Now, if I can resist using it all, I might still be able to conceal my greed when she comes to stay.

Two Coffee Counties are Better Than One

November 19th, 2009 by keen bean

Since there are so many curiously named places, I was all but certain that there would be at least one destination named Coffee. In fact, I half expected there to be a couple of towns or villages that had ended up with names like Ground Coffee Heights or Organic Coffee Valley. Alas, what I came up with was simply named Coffee County.

It is Georgia, USAs 108th county, and it was named for General John E. Coffee. That gentleman was a soldier, state legislator and ultimately congressman. The territory has a population of around 38,000, and appears to be a quaint place to live. The only surprise in this story is that there is yet another Coffee County in neighbouring Tennessee, USA. And yep, both counties are in fact named after the very same individual. Imagine that.

Ethics Based Consumerism Online

November 18th, 2009 by keen bean

It was with fair trade coffee that I made my entrance into the world of ethics-based consumerism. Candidly, it was not so much of a planned moved, as it was that I really liked the coffee. Though it was only a baby step, I concede, I had to start somewhere. Since making that move, I have taken a stronger interest in the products that I purchase. In fact, not a year goes by when I do not participate in the Fair trade Fortnight Campaign.

As such, I have become committed to the practice of only purchasing certain items if they are fair trade. This has been a staple in my world for the last 5 years, and I have no intention of ever doing otherwise. So, I am thrilled to find that I can buy coffee online and not stray from my well-advised preference. Now, I just have to work on building up my proclivity to stick to only fair trade labelled items in other categories also.

Coffee and Tea Themed Gift Packages

November 17th, 2009 by keen bean

There is a growing trend that involves making coffee and tea themed gift packages. I first heard of it from one of the women in my quilting group. She told me that she had just finished making 20 adorable sewn packages that were either focused on coffee or tea. As she spoke, others chimed in with their own renditions of items they had created, seen at craft shows, admired in shops, or won in contests. I immediately became a fan of the idea, for it seems like such a thoughtful and personalized way to provide a present.

After returning home, I began to do a bit of online research and came across a mountain worth of materials describing ideal boxes, bags, baskets and even kettles. My favourite involved a gourmet coffee theme, but then again I am partial to a good cuppa. Anyway, I am now planning to centre all of my holiday gifts on this beverage theme, and cannot wait to get started on my very own version.

My Pick for the Number One Site for Fairtrade Information

November 16th, 2009 by keen bean

Fairtrade coffee has excelled at an extraordinary rate since its inception in 1989. As an avid coffee drinker this process in which the coffee beans are grown by small farmers and then marketed throughout the world is fascinating. It is simply remarkable how this area of Fairtade has flourished.

If you are interested in finding out more about Fairtade coffee, or Fairtade in general, there are numerous sources that provide hours worth of material on the subject. Personally, I am partial to the website called A Fair Trade Hub. The material is concise and the layout straightforward. In fact, if I were a teacher covering the topic of Fairtrade, I think that this would be a great asset. The photos are vivid and would hold the attention of students of all ages, and there is even a section discussing the future of the production of Fairtrade products.

Coffee Fact Versus Fiction

November 15th, 2009 by keen bean

You may read that one coffee supplier says one thing about a coffee subject, and another says something entirely different. One example of this is the claim that espresso offers the drinker more caffeine than regular brewed coffee. This is nothing more than a myth, and as thus the truth should be established for those interested in it.

In reality, the Arabica beans that espresso comes from has a smaller amount of caffeine than Robusta beans. Plus, the brewing process for espresso last 30 seconds and as such there is less caffeine extracted than in the 5 minute drip coffee practice. However, it is true that the Arabica beans do have a richer taste than the less expensive Robusta bean. Now you know the truth, and can happily continue to buy fair trade coffee online with the knowledge to support your choice in product.

Great Coffee That You Have Never Tried

November 14th, 2009 by keen bean

With the establishment of the online coffee shop, consumers are given the chance to sample coffees that may not have formerly been available to them. For example, a fairtrade coffee supplier might provide the bulk of their selection to businesses. So, the only people who would have the fortune to become acquainted with the beverage would be those who worked for, or visited the establishment who ordered from the supplier.

Now, individuals can order directly from companies and experience a new world of coffees that was previously unknown to them. Hence, the unfolding of a tasters paradise. For those of us who love coffee, this is one technical advancement we will cherish, and explore from the comfort of our homes.

Buy a Stranger a Cup of Coffee

November 13th, 2009 by keen bean

The sleepinginairports.net website has a comment left by a girl who says a security officer offered her a free coffee during her stay overnight in the airport. The reason I mention it is because it seems so rare that people buy a stranger a cup of coffee out of consideration or friendly gesture anymore. Though I personally have never slept in an airport, day or night, I would imagine the after hours block of time must be quite monotonous. Most shops and restaurants would be closed, and the cleaners probably loudly focused on their duties.

So to hear that an airport employee made the civilized gesture of the coffee gift, with no strings attached is refreshing. The offering was wonderful for many different reasons. In todays climate many people keep to themselves, avoiding human contact during the course of their day. But, some still reach out and make a gesture that reminds us that things do not always have to be so guarded.

Celebrities Drink Coffee Too

November 12th, 2009 by keen bean

While doing an internet search for ground coffee, I came upon a tremendous amount of information regarding celebrities and coffee. I found this to be silly, because I am not one who is easily interested in the lives of celebrities. I simply do not get the world wide interest in the intricacies of the daily lives of people I do not know, nor have I ever met.

Now, thanks to a never ending supply of updates on who is drinking which organic coffee, I feel my mind is cluttered with nonsense. I mean, I just do not think is it really news to inform the world that celebs drink coffee, or what they wear while doing it. In addition, I would never start drinking one brand of coffee simply because a starlet, or big screen heartthrob, had a cup of it once at a café. Coffee selection should be a personal choice based upon things like flavour, social consciousness, and possibly price.

Why You Should Buy Coffee Online Before a Move

November 11th, 2009 by keen bean

I really regret not having thought to buy coffee online prior to our move into a new house. We just made the trek from one town to another with all of our belongings in tow. The move itself was majorly stressful, and unpacking seems to have even trumped that level. In retrospect, I could have undertaken one very simple preliminary act, and minimized the discomfort to some extent. I should have gone online and ordered our coffee before making the move.

If I had taken the brief moments to organize the delivery of our coffee to our new home, we would have avoided a couple of uncomfortable instances. Such as, my wife having to run out in the wintery cold at sunrise in a new town to locate fair trade coffee. In turn, we would have skipped the tension and grumpy attitudes that coincide with not having the warm energy-producing beverage. Ah the retrospectrascope is such a wonderfully useless instrument for me in this situation. Oh well, I will know for next time I suppose.
